The Dawson County Chamber of Commerce, located in Dawsonville, Georgia, is seeking a qualified Director of Economic Development to join our team. The Director of Economic Development is responsible for the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, and assessment of all economic development activities for the Dawson County area.  The primary focus of the Director of Economic Development is on traditional economic development activities (e.g. recruitment, retention, expansion, etc.).
Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Develop, plan, manage, and implement goals and objectives based on the economic development program of work.
  • Develop a marketing plan to promote community to industrial and business prospects that include brokers, site selectors, state & utility project managers and others for lead generation.
  • Mobilize the Chamber and Development Authority boards around specific initiatives needed to increase and maintain a competitive business environment in Dawson County.
  • Provide leadership and hands-on management of business recruitment and retention efforts to ensure a vibrant economy in Dawson County.
  • In coordination with the Development Authority board and Chamber President, develop a strategic plan for the economic development program that ensures Dawson County is an attractive and competitive opportunity for new industry and business.
  • Maintain records and develop reports concerning new or ongoing programs and program effectiveness.
  • In coordination with the Development Authority chairman, coordinate and plan Development Authority board meetings (including but not limited to minutes maintenance and posting, agenda development and distribution, meeting notifications, etc.).
  • Maintain Development Authority compliance with applicable laws and regulations including annual registration requirements.
  • Conduct a variety of organization studies, investigations and operational studies; recommend modifications to economic development programs, policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings such as the Georgia Economic Developers Association; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of economic development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree, from an accredited college or university in economic development, public administration, planning, business, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in economic development, community development, local and regional planning, and public administration required; as well as experience in developing and implementing community engagement activities, strategic planning, group facilitation, or other areas aimed at community and economic development objectives.
  • Possession of a current, valid State of Georgia driver’s license.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop leadership teams and programs.
  • Familiarity with various resources available from the State of Georgia, foundations, partnerships, associations, or private sectors that support local economic development activities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with various, diverse businesses, economic development partners, and civic organizations.
  • Understanding of partnerships and how to develop them.
  • Ability to coordinate and support collaborative projects involving a number of separate entities.
  • Ability to translate group concepts into project plans.
  • Ability and willingness to perform all administrative, supervisory and conceptual planning functions to complete projects.
  • Self-directed, requiring little supervision.
  • Ability to provide oversight and management to related projects and designated staff, as appropriate.
  • Ability to complete projects with minimal support and supervision.
  • Making complex decisions and interpretation in accordance with established rules, policies and procedures
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in economic development, public administration, planning, business, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field.
  • Certified Economic Developer or desire to retain certification, preferred.
 

Physical Demands:
  • This position most frequently requires work in an indoor office setting but occasionally, requires work outdoors or in industrial spaces.
  • This position requires the ability to navigate short distances in an industrial setting, walk safely on uneven surfaces, climb stairs, and occasionally stand or sit for long periods of time.
  • This position may require working irregular hours and will require travel.
